View all Seed Pods

Landscape format watercolour painting of Honesty seed pod with six seeds. We see an irregular ovaloid anchored in a grey green rectangle by the stem and it's opposite spike. Inside the oval we see small particles dispersing as if swimming in an amber fluid. Six darker round seeds are attached to the rim of the (oval) by a thread and gather towards the centre of the pod. The pod is not painted life size but many times enlarged to approximately 7x10 inches.

From the Artist:

I painted many specimens of honesty pods in the 1990's. The potential for the development of seeds within these pods is up to eight seeds. Many have only six, some four or three with also sometimes a small underdeveloped seed apparent amongst the group.

I painted these pods whilst they were still maturing and before drying out. I shone a light through them and all the colours I saw are true to life.

To me they are a metaphor for a cell, an ovary or womb. I felt like a scientist peering down a microscope trying to document what I saw.
