Ovum
1999
Jane Furst
This is a large portrait format oil painting on canvas, The composition shows a central vertical pod which has five seeds bulging along its stem. The first four from the base are seen sideways whilst the largest at the top is shown facing the viewer to reveal its frilly edge more precisely. It becomes apparent that the seed or seeds are held in round capsules which evolve from the stem. The whole composition is an essay of Ochre hues with the detail of the central image surrounded by a textured ochre background.
From the Artist
This specimen painted true to nature suggested two things to me. The development of eggs in the Ovum and along a Fallopian tube and also a
modernist bronze sculpture. It is for this latter reason I did a large painting.
