This is a square format mezzotint etching, printed in green black.  Showing a range of tonal shapes which have undulating lines in front of a complex internal structure.  This image is based on a jellyfish which comes from Ernst Haeckel's studies.  The title "Pump", suggests moving parts, and there are two wheels in the base of this internal structure.  There is a flask like shape between them which could be some sort of pump.  This central image is surrounded by a dark background with some bubbles in it, which suggests that it is pumping.

This image is part of a series of sixteen mezzotints, some of which I developed under the guidance of two etchers at Morley College London, who were mezzotint master print makers. Dorothea Wight and her husband Marc Balakjian.  This series of sixteen etchings, I call Marine Machine.  For each etching, many of the images have been taken from Ernst Haeckel's studies, but they suggest to me the mechanisms within the ocean which drive life and movement upon sea and land.
