Rape Seed
1998
Jane Furst
Portrait format oil painting on canvas which is approximately six feet by three feet. It shows three versions of the same slender elongated pod rising up from the base to the top of the rectangle. In the pod on the left we see that the compartments which once contained seeds now only have two black ones. The compartments are whitish in colour. The central pod is complete and seen from the side so we see the bulges which contain the seeds within, In the pod on the right we are looking at the side view again of the pod which has now lost both its outer casings. We see that there is a seed still attached on either side of this central panel. The pods have a red/amber hue and they are set against a yellow background.
From the artist
In this painting I am exploring the interplay to the form of the pod as it looses parts of its structure in order to disperse the seeds. It is a visual pun of changing forms. The yellow background suggests the haze and heat of a high summer day.
