This is a portrait format dry point etching with a monochrome rolled background.  Showing an Egyptian barge near the horizon with a dark blue moody sky and a crescent old moon on the right hand side of the sail of the barge.  Below the barge is a deep black suggesting the waters it is floating on.  In these waters are strange organic shapes, inspired by Diatoms and various other microscopic marine life.  They each have a slightly different colour, such as pink, blue and mauves.

From the Artist

This work is a part of a series of dry point etchings I made using boats as a subject matter. I took the boat images from technical line drawings showing boats throughout history.  The Egyptian barge particularly captured me because it has much symbolic meaning in Egyptian mythology.  The barge is to the take Pharaoh into the afterlife, and one of the Diatoms prominently suspended vertically resembles for me a mummified figure. This idea is suggesting connection between the subconscious mind, the microscopic and the macroscopic.  And the old moon stands for death, whereas the barge represents new life in the afterlife.  For the Egyptians the life after death is for the spirit, a new life.
