Portrait format watercolour painting of a stem which rises up from the base and opens out into a pod with a number of sections, these sections are like funnels which open to a small aperture with a curled tendril.
These tendrils may suggest something such as the legs of an insect. The pod is golden in hue with striped striations, and beyond the pod is the suggestion of a stormy sky.
The border for the painting is a goldleaf strip with a repeating pattern etched into it. The pattern echoes some of the forms seen in the pod.
From the Artist:
When I paint a pod such as this, I also focus on the individuality of the pod. Which may reveal some deformities as it dried out.
In other words its not necessarily a perfect specimen and I see the pod as I am painting it in its own dramatic setting.
Often the image I am working on, will stand as a metaphor for something else. Such as in this case an insect. And I am hoping to show that in its deformity it also has beauty.
